17. R. Droms, ‘‘DNS Configuration Options for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol for IPv6 (DHCPv6),’’ RFC3646, December 2003. 3 Deploying IPv6 in Cable Networks In this chapter we discuss IPv6 deployment in cable networks, providing an overview of key network elements, different deployment models, and challenges in deploying IPv6 over a cable network. Most equipment used in cable networks today conforms to the data over cable service interface specifications (DOCSIS) standard. DOCSIS defines the communications and operations support interface requirements for data over cable systems.

In the second deployment model the host, GWR, and ER are upgraded to dual-stack functionality to support IPv6. The CM and CMTS remain as IPv4 devices. In this scenario, IPv6 in a IPv4 tunnel is established between the GWR and the ER. The GWR interface connected to the CM remains IPv4, while the interface connected to the host can be configured as a dual-stack functionality. Similarly, the ER interface facing the CMTS remains IPv4, while the interfaces connected to the ISP core/aggregation network can be configured in dual-stack mode.

17 Use of RA for the redirect process. suggesting the use of R1 to reach the targeted destination. Node A then resends the packet using R1 as its default router for the destination address. Let’s consider a scenario where customer A has received its IPv6 address range from service provider X (SP-X), and customer A decides to change its service provider to SP-Y. In this case, customer A will receive a new IPv6 address range from SP-Y. Once a new IPv6 address range is received from SP-Y, customer A will have to renumber its network with the new address range received from SP-Y.
