Most equipment used in cable networks today conforms to the data over cable service interface speciﬁcations (DOCSIS) standard. DOCSIS deﬁnes the communications and operations support interface requirements for data over cable systems.
In the second deployment model the host, GWR, and ER are upgraded to dual-stack functionality to support IPv6. The CM and CMTS remain as IPv4 devices. In this scenario, IPv6 in a IPv4 tunnel is established between the GWR and the ER. The GWR interface connected to the CM remains IPv4, while the interface connected to the host can be conﬁgured as a dual-stack functionality. Similarly, the ER interface facing the CMTS remains IPv4, while the interfaces connected to the ISP core/aggregation network can be conﬁgured in dual-stack mode.
