Leverrier showed by consideration of possible perturbations that the total mass of the belt was no more than the planet Mars. E. Barnard estimated the diameters of the brightest members in 1894 and confirmed that they were very small. In fact, we now know that their total mass is less than 10 per cent that of the Moon, which is itself an insignificant fraction of the overall mass of the Solar System. C. Bond was sent to Europe to inspect the workings of similar institutions. Upon his return, he submitted his report and promptly established his own observatory at Dorchester in order to develop instruments and methods.

Upon his return, he submitted his report and promptly established his own observatory at Dorchester in order to develop instruments and methods. When the Harvard College Observatory was completed in 1844 with a fine 15-inch refractor made in Germany by Merz-Mahler, Bond was appointed as its first director. Noting that the distribution of Saturn's satellites followed a pattern reminiscent of the Titius±Bode progression, astronomers pondered the intriguing `gap' between Titan and Iapetus. William Lassell, a wealthy brewer, had built a 24-inch reflector for his private observatory in Liverpool in England, and in 1846, several weeks after the planet Neptune had been discovered, he spotted a large satellite.

Ainslie, who had a 9-inch refractor at Blackheath, and J. Knight, who had a 5-inch refractor at Rye in Sussex, monitored a 7th magnitude star passing behind the `A' ring on 9 February 1917, thereby providing a measure of the transparency across a chord of that ring. A. Ellison employed the 10-inch Grubb refractor of the Armagh Observatory in Ireland to monitor Iapetus in eclipse, catching it after it had already cleared the `B' ring and was illuminated by light through Cassini's Division. Shortly after noting its passage into the `A' ring's shadow, Ellison was called away from the telescope for 50 minutes, but on his return he was able to monitor the remainder of the moon's passage through the shadow as it never completely disappeared, thereby confirming that the `A' ring was translucent.
