In the uplink direction, the mobile device continues using only a single spreading code for a dedicated channel. All cells taking part in the soft handover are instructed by the RNC to decode the data sent with this code and forward it to the RNC. During soft handover, the RNC thus receives several copies of the user’s uplink data stream. This increases the likelihood that a packet is received correctly and does not have to be retransmitted. The cells which are involved in a soft handover for a dedicated channel are referred to as the active set.
